CNN reports a Texas family being awarded $2.9 million for
both personal health and property damages from nearby hydraulic fracturing or
“fracking.” This court ruling is unprecedented in ongoing reports of health and
environmental concerns from across the nation due to fracking.
Court Awards Damages for Texas Family in Fracking
Last year in the US, 72 trillion gallons of water, salt and over 360 billion gallons of 600 known carcinogenic chemicals were pumped into the earth to extract natural gas from shale rock through the use of pressurized hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking". The fracking industry itself admits to reclaiming only 30% to 50% of that solution. Where do the residual chemicals go? Groundwater near frack sites show Methane contamination to be 17% higher.

It is difficult to successfully challenge powerful oil and gas companies to hold them accountable for damages caused by sloppy technologies, shoddy workmanship and drilling too close to populated areas. Kudos to the family and their lawyer for fighting a good fight!
ReplyDeleteNot that familiar with fracking but I do know some friends of ours own a oil company in Tulsa. They are always making sure there in no fracking. Good for them.
ReplyDeleteYou can't blame the Koch Brothers for fracking. You have to blame the Koch Brothers' father, Fred Koch. Fred was working in Russia/Soviet Union with their experts, showing them how to do this. Fred learned about many things during his fracking years.
ReplyDeleteWithout reading more about this process, my love for the earth thinks this cannot be a good thing, I wonder.... what might be the long term consquences? I'm thinking things like triggering earthquakes or sink holes, maybe this is crazy thinking. I see you have articles about it being done eco friendly, I definitely plan to come back and read more about this process and become informed, very interesting, great blog.
ReplyDeleteAre they fracking in the flint hills? And is this going to hurt our environment around here?
ReplyDeleteI wonder if this was a settlement or the actual amount they were suing for ....
